The LAWS™ Hazard Alert System.  A patented innovation in outdoor hazard warnings, this siren system provides a cost effective solution to the need for public notification of potential risks in outdoor areas where citizens are the most vulnerable. Typical applications for this outdoor warning system include: campuses, parks, recreation areas, and sport complexes; virtually any place where people gather outdoors. The level of preparedness currently available from NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) can now be offered to people in public places. LAWS™ Hazard Alert Systems make possible local area broadcasts of NWR warnings -- the kind of information that can save lives.
Weather Alert System Siren
siren system for tornado warnings
  • Provides high power alert signal tone, voice hazard message and visual notification.
  • NOAA-activated digitally by NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) broadcast signals.
  • Not limited to weather warnings, the LAWS™ Hazard Alert System communicates alerts for any type of hazard covered by NWR.
  • An excellent way to provide local hazard notification without activating a municipality's general siren system.
  • NWR voice messaging system provides more than a siren, it clarifies the threat and advises appropriate actions to be taken.
  • The LAWS™ Hazard Alert System broadcasts NWR warnings; specific messages for specific audiences in specific areas.
The LAWS™ Hazard Alert System relies on the NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) SAME system, which provides warning messages covering a wide array of hazards via VHF-FM radio broadcasts. The LAWS™ Hazard Alert System receives NWR transmissions and broadcasts them through amplified speakers to persons in the covered area. The NWR broadcasts are preceded by an 8 second alarm tone. As the alarm tone sounds a high intensity signal light is activated -- RED for potentially life threatening emergencies and AMBER for watches. The warning light remains active for the duration of the event as defined by the National Weather Service. This provides both a visual signal and audible broadcast. Other alerting options are available.

It is important to note the National Weather Service has been designated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a medium for the communication of all-hazard alerts and warnings. The list of hazard alerts which may be broadcast by NWR is comprehensive and may include not only tornadoes, hurricanes and tsunamis, but also terrorist attacks and HAZMAT dangers. Each type of alert is classified and coded.

The LAWS
Hazard Alert System can be customized to fit the needs of the locale by selecting specific alerts to broadcast in designated areas. Virtually any type of civil emergency can be coded for the LAWS Hazard Alert System. See http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/ for more details. Once programmed, the LAWS™ Hazard Alert System automatically broadcasts the designated alerts to your target audience, requiring no local input to activate.
